Canada's Etymology
Canada is believed to have originated from the word Kanata which is from the Iroquois tribe near St. Lawrence. Kanata meant village or settlement.
French explorer Jacques Cartier start to be the first want to use the term Canada and he was describing the area around present-day Quebec city in the mid-1500s.
Similar to other explorers in history, James Keitel was searching for a route to Asia in his early explorations.
As explorers and fur traders went further into the interior of North America they continue to use the word to describe more and more of the area and so that is how the name Canada grew from the St. Lawrence area to most of Canada.
